Mowbray is a North Yorkshire County Council co-educational special school situated in a lovely rural setting in the market town of Bedale, with a warm and welcoming community of staff and pupils who strive to make each other feel part of our community.
We serve a very large catchment area covering 1,400 square miles from Stockton on Tees to Harrogate, with 222 pupils currently attending from both rural and urban areas, as well as military bases.
What we do: Our school educates and cares for pupils aged three to sixteen years who have an Education Health Care Plan, with a wide range of learning difficulties including:
• Moderate, severe and complex learning difficulties
• Speech, language and communication difficulties
• Physical and sensory impairments
• Social, emotional and behavioural difficulties
• Autistic Spectrum Conditions including Aspergers
Our Facilities: Our school environment is purpose-designed to enable pupils to enjoy their learning in well equipped classrooms, arts, crafts and music rooms, sensory spaces and our fantastic new sports hall, as well as outdoors on our own working farm and nature reserve or further afield on the many exciting and adventurous outward bound activities we organise to help pupils to learn and develop. Life is never dull at Mowbray!
In January 2020 Mowbray School will open a satellite provision in Ripon for Primary aged pupils, we will take possession of what is currently Moorside Infant School. With the assistance of North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) we will refurbish the site and buildings to ensure it meets the needs of children with SEND. The children will all have an EHCP and have similar needs to pupils who attend our main site in Bedale. This new provision will help both us and NYCC to meet the increasing numbers of children who need placements in specialist provision schools. I very much look forward to seeing the provision become established, as I know that it will become an excellent provision.
Our Ethos: The school vision is SURE: achieving ‘Success through Understanding, Respect and Endeavour’. This underpins all learning and values that parents, pupils and staff share and strive to promote and develop here at Mowbray School. We were last inspected by OFSTED in December 2017 and graded as good. We are also proud to be one of only a select number of schools worldwide to be re-accredited by the National Autistic Society and have been awarded a commendation for our work in Outdoor Learning and on our farm. In November 2018 we were awarded ‘The Wellbeing Award for Schools‘ which is a National Standard for Positive Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing and in April 2019 we have achieved the ‘NYCC Attachment Aware Schools Status’, these awards reflect very much the qualities and expertise of our staff.
