Mowbray is a North Yorkshire County Council co-educational special school and has two sites, one in Bedale for pupils aged 3 years to 16 years and an additional primary satellite site in Ripon. Both sites have a warm and welcoming community of staff and pupils who strive to make each other feel part of our community.
We serve a very large catchment area covering 1,400 square miles from Stockton on Tees to Harrogate, with 265 pupils currently attending both sites from both rural and urban areas, as well as military bases. Our satellite site in Ripon serves educates primary aged pupils predominantly from the districts of Ripon, Harrogate and Knaresborough.
What we do: Our school educates and cares for pupils aged three to sixteen years who have an Education Health Care Plan, with a wide range of learning difficulties including:
• Moderate, severe and complex learning difficulties
• Speech, language and communication difficulties
• Physical and sensory impairments
• Social, emotional and behavioural difficulties
• Autistic Spectrum Conditions including Aspergers
Our Facilities: Both our school sites are purpose-designed to enable pupils to enjoy their learning in well equipped classrooms, arts, crafts and music rooms, sensory spaces and sports hall, as well as outdoors on our own working farm and nature reserve at our Bedale site or further afield on the many exciting and adventurous outward bound activities we organise to help pupils to learn and develop. Life is never dull at Mowbray!
In January 2020 we opened our satellite provision in Ripon for Primary aged pupils. With the assistance of North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) we have refurbished the site and buildings to ensure it meets the needs of children with SEND. The children all have an EHCP and have similar needs to pupils who attend our main site in Bedale. This new provision is helping both us and NYCC to meet the increasing numbers of children who need placements in specialist provision schools. We are delighted with what have created so far and what we are creating in the future, allowing us to increase the capacity of the site to educate up to sixty pupils.
Our Ethos: The school vision is SURE: achieving ‘Success through Understanding, Respect and Endeavour’. This underpins all learning and values that parents, pupils and staff share and strive to promote and develop here at Mowbray School. We were last inspected by OFSTED in December 2017 and graded as good. We are also proud to be one of only a select number of schools worldwide to be re-accredited by the National Autistic Society and have been awarded a commendation for our work in Outdoor Learning and on our farm. In November 2018 we were awarded ‘The Wellbeing Award for Schools‘ which is a National Standard for Positive Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing and in April 2019 we have achieved the ‘NYCC Attachment Aware Schools Status’, these awards reflect very much the qualities and expertise of our staff.
